Are you going to SWISH for AIDS? December 1 2011

Are you going to SWISH on December 1st? Are you going to strut, swagger, shimmy, roller skate, stride, mince or sashay? We don’t care. We just want you to be there.

The AIDS Swish is a street carnival of remembrance, pride and community. The Swish also signals the start of all the events occurring in the bars for Soho Red Thursday.  The idea is simple; as a community, we dress up like we mean to party, then SWISH down Old Compton Street in colourful acknowledgement that we enjoy and respect life. The AIDS Swish is an affirmation- we’re here and we care, not just about ourselves but each other.  _______________________________________________________________________________________

The Swish starts at 6pm at the junction of Moor Street and Old Compton Street (Ed’s Diner).  We’ll SWISH down Old Compton Street, turn right into Wardour Street and the Post Swish Finish is at Lo Profile where there’ll be a surprise performance, a keynote speaker and a celebratory drink. At 8pm, to signify the completion of The Swish, all the bars in Soho will play Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’.

Swishers are encouraged to carry glo-sticks for the duration of the event and to dress up, be creative, eye catching and fun. The AIDS Swish aims to be memorable, colourful and thought provoking, engaging all corners of the community and inspires people to connect with the issues at hand, even if only for 30 minutes or so.

The SWISH is not a fund raising event and not connected to any charity. Many charities will be collecting on that day, it’s simply a method of raising awareness that as yet, London has no permanent AIDS Memorial, where people can gather at any time, from any country, for any reason of remembrance. The London AIDS Memorial Campaign aim to hold the SWISH as an annual event until a permanent space is achieved.
